One of my favorite general-public science books is The Story of Earth by Robert Hazen. He’s s leading mineralogist who studies rocks and minerals not as essential substances (formed of particular elements with certain physical properties) but as evolving substances that have developed over the course of Earth’s history, influenced by and influencing biological processes.

Here’s a general-public lecture by Robert Hazen on this topic. Skip over introductory remarks to about 12:00, where it takes off and gets interesting very quickly.

TL;DR: Supernovas create a bunch of elements (including gold, and, ironically, diamonds, which are just extreme carbon). Planetary formation combines those elements into a few hundred minerals. But only life can turn a few hundred minerals into thousands. Which may be a good way to look for signs of life on other planets.
